The picturesque village of CORFE CASTLE in the centre of the Isle of Purbeck is dominated by the impressive ruin of the Norman castle which was besieged and sacked during the civil war in 1646. Now run by the National Trust, the dramatic mediaeval ruins - once the most impregnable fortress in the kingdom- give breathtaking views across the Purbecks.
And with guided tours, you can step back in time to the days of King John and the tense period of the Civil War. At the visitors centre north of the castle-where there are full refreshment facilities- you can even try on chain mail to feel what it was really like.
Something else from the past that was demolished but has now come back is the popular steam railway which is being rebuilt from Swanage, Swanage volunteers reopened Corfe Castle's restored Victorian station to the first public trains for more than 20 years. The steam trains now run from Swanage to Corfe Castle itself
